Such a highly debated topic about dress code. I think dress code is important to golf, I started playing about 3 months ago and some courses near me offer a strict smart dress code. It does not however have to be expensive. I had a pair of chino trousers and a plain polo shirt in my wardrobe. What I do agree with is that although dress codes can be relaxed they should still be kept smart. A smart or well dressed person tends to have some pride in how they look and feel good about themselves. I would hate to see someone turn up with ripped work jeans and a football shirt for example. If they have no pride in what they wear would they take pride in the course they are playing on? Would they replace those divots and look after that wonderfully kept green? I wouldn’t want a dress code to prevent new players but there are plenty of outlets selling smart looking cheaper than golf shop alternatives. I think it’s about showing a willingness to look smart, it means your more likely to make an effort in the whole game.
