Understanding Golf Course Etiquette: A Guide for New Golfers

By Chloe Overton

Oct 16, 2024·2 mins

Golf is a game of honour and respect, not just for the rules, but also for fellow players and the course itself. As a new golfer, understanding golf course etiquette is essential to ensure a good experience for everyone. Here’s a guide to help you navigate the basics of golf etiquette.

Respect for the Course

  1. Repairing Divots and Ball Marks: Always repair any divots you create on the fairway and ball marks on the greens. This helps maintain the course for other players.
  2. Raking Bunkers: After hitting from a bunker, use a rake to smooth out the sand. This ensures the next player isn’t faced with a difficult lie.
  3. Avoiding Slow Play: Keep up with the pace of play to avoid holding up groups behind you. Be ready to hit your shot when it’s your turn and limit practice swings.

Respect for Other Players

  1. Silence and Stillness: When someone is preparing to hit their shot, stand still and remain quiet to avoid distractions. This respect allows players to concentrate fully.
  2. Safe Distances: Ensure you are standing at a safe distance when others are swinging. Avoid walking ahead of the player whose turn it is to hit.
  3. Order of Play: Generally, the player farthest from the hole hits first. On the tee box, honours go to the player with the lowest score on the previous hole.

General Conduct

  1. Dress Code: Adhere to the dress code of the golf club you are visiting. This typically includes collared shirts, golf trousers or shorts, and appropriate footwear.
  2. Mobile Phones: Keep mobile phones on silent or vibrate mode. Use them sparingly to avoid disturbing others.
  3. Golf Cart Etiquette: If using a golf cart, follow the course’s rules regarding cart paths and fairways. Avoid driving on greens or near hazards.

Understanding and practicing good golf etiquette enhances the experience for everyone on the course. By showing respect for the course, fellow players, and the game itself, you contribute to a positive and enjoyable golfing environment.
